What can survive -4C in my garden?

We hit -4C last night, a couple of weeks before normal. I did cover my tomatoes, but I think it was just too cold for them and the leaves have all turned black :(

My pumpkin plant which was huge and leafy now has leaves totally flat on the ground, exposing 3 pumpkins which were previously very well hidden. Do you think I can still pick them and do anytthing with them, even though they are green?

How about potatoes and carrots? The plants of the potato plants are all drooped over and dead, but the carrot leaves are sticking up and looking normal.
Do you think it'll do the potatoes any harm to stay in the ground a few more weeks, even though the plants are dead? I'd prefer to dig them up as needed for eating, then hervest them all at the beginning of Oct.
What about the carrots? What does frost do to carrots?

Any info appreciated! We normally pick everything before it frosts/snows, but this year it came too early.

i think if you cut the tops off the potatoes (leave just a bit of stalk) they will be ok. I suppose it depends on how hard the ground becomes whether you will be able to dig them out? Theoretically though they should be ok.

Carrots and pumpkins , sorry, I don't know.

I can't help either - but do know that my toms are starting to ripen indoors, so got to be worth a go with the pumpkins. You won't lose anything if the pant has died.

The trouble is if you leave your potatoes and carrots in and the ground freezes you'll never get them out!

I wouldn't think they will grow much more if the temperature has dropped that much. So the pots should keep in sacks kept in the dark.

I think carrots can be kept in trays of sand? Most root veggies keep for some time.

All root veg will keep for month when properly stored. It needs to be dark and not too cold.
