What colour is your front door?

Postby Calv » Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:51 pm

No i haven't got my "ask a stupid question" hat on again :-? , I'm looking to brighten up my front doorway and as well s getting some nice new hanging baskets (bit late yes i know, but i was thinking pansies and ivy for the winter), i was also wondering about door colour.

At the moment i have a dark brown, standard colour for the upvc doors round here, however i've seen a couple lately on my travels that really stand out nice.

My main colour i am leaning towards is red. Not quite pillarbox red, but maybe a slightly duller shade.

Yellow looks good on some houses, but i'm not a great fan of the colour.

Any ideas? I looked on Google and found a few nice pics for inspiration...

Our front door is white which I quite like. The garage door is black and with brick between the two look ok I think.

Mine is white. It was mahogany coloured wood but I wasn't that keen on it so painted it. Like the dark red and yellow ones too as long as they're with the right kind of brickwork. If I remember correctly one of the things that I liked about houses in Dublin was the lovely coloured doors (although it's been a few years since I've been there).

Boring UPVC white.

Our old house had a blue wooden door that let the rain and wind in. It did look stylish but changed it to a double glazed white one which looked lovely. It was a 1930s style door but plastic.

ours is white - but love the pics. We don't have flower beds near - so it would be a case of planters. I generally don't bother - you can't really see ours as there are always cars in front of it as that is where the drive is. I would love to have a drive at the side so you can see it.

I have planted up a winter tub for the back - which is a first for me in many years - have put loads of bulbs in it and some winter flowering heathers.

Ours is white.

If yours is UVPC I don't think you can paint it Calv.

I thought that would be a problem too, but if i remember rightly you can get special primers for things like UPVC, similar to the primer you'd use on melamane and the likes.

I'll investigate further though, cheers Net.

I wouldn't want to attempt to paint an external UPVC door Calv. I know the paint that you use on indoor melamine stuff isn't that durable.

Plus is your house yours? Cos I'm thinking your landlord might not be too keen if you paint it.

No it's not mine Net, but i know they don't mind here.

I had a look at some threads on the Srewfix forum, lots of of decorators on there who say there are paints and primers for UVPC but it's not the best job in the world.

Might just stick with what i have and pretty up the porch area.

Thanks everyone.

Ours are red and I love them! That said though, the shutters are also red and there is some red and white trim on the woodwork - so anything but red doors would look a bit odd really!!
