Visiting towns etc where your ancestors lived

Postby Carolyn » Thu Sep 27, 2012 6:26 pm

Have you done this? Maybe been to the local museum or the library - what sort of results did you have?

I have visited cemeteries, and find that some has been quite useful as it confirms the date of death and often other family members. I take photos and transcribe them at home, and just take pictures of any surname that looks familiar.

As yet I have not done much else, but feel that I want to find out more...what I need is a local historian to meet me somewhere - they are always there on who do you think you are!

Often the little local museums are run by volunteers but can be a mine of information about the village/town throughout it's history. These are often not open every day and so check for opening times before visiting.
