Classes v Self taught?

Postby DingleDel » Thu Apr 07, 2011 2:03 pm

I had an email the other day from a shop fairly local to me advertising some classes. This was quite timely as I have been thinking about trying out some different stamping, inking techniques.

BUT

with finances being as they are I was reluctant to pay

I have been to a few classes over the years and have enjoyed them. Like you say it is ME time and a treat. There is nothing like being shown something and having all the materials there.

You need to feel it is value for money if you go to a class. If the course is well run and has everything you need then it is great being with like minded people. However I do enjoy buying lots of craft stuff and having a play. I have got some crafty friends and we get together every now and then so I do get the best of both worlds as we all share our knowledge.

Not much help for you there really. Sorry!!

I've attended a few and taught a few. I have to say that they've been fun and its nice to chat with fellow addicts :roflmao: If its something you've never done its sometimes nice to have someone show you 'hands on'. I did this with one course and even though I'd watched some clips before hand the personal tips were really useful.

I think I have decided I'd rather spend the money on a few new inks, sprays, stamps, dies....etc etc etc!!!

I am going to have a look around for a few different online tutorials before I buy and try to have some specific projects in my mind to buy for rather than buy aimlessly.

If I come unstuck, I will be shouting loudly on here for advice from you lovley people!

Adele - pm me your town as not sure where it is and will see if I can find someone sympathetic near you.

Sorry you had that experience Rachel - I think alot depends on the demo and their experience. Its like everything where there is a teacher - you need to find the right one for you! I usually focus on a technique and do three cards using that in different ways or building on it with each card

Whilst I always use SU product there are somethings that are better elsewhere but there are also some things that are not. I don't think you should be made to feel you should buy if you are paying for a class - having said that most SU classes break even with the prep time, cost of catalogues, cost of insurance and rooms etc and the reason demos do them is to build a customer base. Having said that if you are prepared to order then the demo will spend time with you.
