no I don't use anything but happy to give you some tips.

Firstly I check out pockets and decide if they are interesting enough, and where they would work best on a bag.

I tend to either cut jeans in half from crotch to top., and usually cut either side of the zip, but sometime leave it in if I think I can sew, then cut legs off and use these for straps.

Or I have cut the from crotch to top, and then on the side seams, then fold up the legs to make the back.

It depends how big the jeans are what you will do, so if you have a pair of kids jeans you can just make one bag out of the lot
If they are size 14 or above you should get at least 2 bags.
You can always add a strip to make them wider from the legs, you can often use the bottom hem on the top.

if you intend to join do not cut too close to jeans seams as you will never sew through it - leave an inch to attach to.

I make straps from 4 or 5 inch lengths and turn in raw edges and top stitch close.
If I use a different fabric for straps (thinner) I fold in half and half again, and often use interfacing strip too - this will depend if I have used a lot of the legs for the bags.

I have literally cut off a pocket close to the stitching and then added it to a leg if I was short of a pocket.

Have also made a flap to a pocket, lace, etc all to brighten them up.

I used to join inside to outside by right sides together and turn inside out but that did take too long. Now I try to have the 'jeans' finished off at the top and then just tuck the lining in and top stitch.

I attach straps before lining and then also it is stitched with lining - so nice and secure.

straps can be added to outside just need to make sure no raw edges - so can cover with lining fabric.

embellish everything before joining seams - much easier!

I think have tagged them all on my blog - you can see the different things I have done

Thank you for the info, I will take another look once I have cleared space in my craft room to get my sewing machine set up!

Do you use a different needle in your machine when you work with denim?

I think most of my jeans are size 10 or 12 but I also have several pairs that Chris doesn't wear so I have plenty to practice with!!

I have learnt a lot of making quite a few!

for smaller ones I have added a 'panel' so like this one, you can see I have added some from a leg

Image

this one I managed 4 bags and was a bit short this last one so made the lining over the top and added interfacing

and this is one where I put the strap on the outside, sometimes this is easier if there are going to be too many layers at the top, these were amongst the best jeans ever with zipped pockets etc, not seen many like this:

will add a few more photos to blog over the week.
