The lime green is particulary fab Carole - I just had a small piece that someone gave me though. It was too small for a scarf and or hat but came in really well for this project. Will look out for more of those shades over the summer - I have tbeen thinking summer is proabably a good time to buy fleece as it is "out of season" The others are all lovely as well though and so soft and snuggly - the weather has been foul here recently so had to photograph everything in doors in artifical light which always messes up the colours a bit! Over and out till after 19.30 now - it's Wednesday again!!!! xxxx N.

They are beautiful Nicki Just tell me what you need. I only need the slightest excuse to go and have a mooch around. I actually went last week, but only had half an hour as they close at 1pm on Friday and I had arranged to meet a friend for lunch. I had to be very disciplined and get just what was on my list. By the way they had those star buttons in packs of separate colours this time.

I wondered why no names - for the playroom, I presume? They're great! That work is so much needed.

Fabulous Nicki. Do the children stay there or just visit during the day?

Hello Kath
At the moment the children go there during the day. There is a place for tiny tiny babies, then several playrooms where directed play goes on - for example getting the little children to dress dolls or "play house" - and the people conducting the play sessions are all trained child therapists and can listen out for anything that isn't right
For example, when I was there, I was able to join two later afternoon sessions wiht 4 and 5 year olds. They could play with the dolls' house, the shop or also sit and read children's books. The two little girls playing "house" decided to dress the dolls and get them ready for a walk. The vocabulary they used and the way they got the dolls out of bed and dressed them shocked me to the roots of my hair! Words that little girls should just never ever hear let alone know when to use flowed from them like we would say "beautiful eyes" and "gorgeous hair". I felt very sick but the therapist there with me encouraged them to talk - and kept gently but firmly replacing their words with ones to describe the body parts or functions more accurately or with respect. It was an eye-opener and I found it very very hard to come to terms with. One of the little girls has been severly abused and is in foster care. The other has since gone into care and there are fears of a similar home situation.
The room for the babies is jsut really like a creche with cots - I couldn't see much because several babies were in there and asleep.
There is also a kitchen with a "proper" dining table and meals are served "normally" and everyone who is in the house at lunchtime sits round the table like a "normal" family meal. Several of the chilren do not have skills for eating at a table or using knives and forks etc and this is somethng they can also learn there.
There are individual therapy rooms for one to one therapy, anger management etc etc.
The whole house has been nicely decorated and carpeted by a range of volunteers and corporate donations.
I've made 26 cushions and they will be spread thorugh the house in the various therapy rooms to start with. I am working towards making one quilt for each room too. I've already made 2 floormats and 4 cushions for one of the "quiet play" rooms and know they are being well used.
There just seems to be such a lot of need - and this in 2010 in a western-world capital city.
Thank you again to everyone who keeps going with this project with me - be it by donation, deed or just kind words of encouragement from time to time,
With love and kindess Nicki xxx

It doesn't take abuse for kids not to eat meals as a family - apparently teachers often have to teach them table manners, because they don't have any.
(And my mother still tells me to sit up straight ..... even though I've hardly sat down!)

Dear Annemarie
I was not meaning that the problem of abuse had anything to do with table manners. It is just another bit of help and insight into "normal" life that the children can get at this place.
Love Nicki x

I wasn't meaning to link it with abuse, either. You could say I was off topic as obviously those kids have far more to recover from than lack of table manners! And lack of table manners doesn't mean abuse - busy parents who both work and don't have time, more likely.
It was just it occurred to me that teachers do complain that kids don't know how to behave at lunchtime when I read they sat down to eat together (which many ordinary families don't, which is a shame as the kids miss out). We always ate together and talked together, but I know even among my sister's friends not everybody did.
As I say, I didn't mean to imply a link with abuse.
