As some of you know my soph has now moved into a support centre - she is getting really bored at nightime... so she thought she would like to have a go at some creative stuff... Shes asked me for a sewing machine - and rach (leggies ) on here is gonna see if she can get one on freecycle for her....

Id like to pick your brains if i may and ask if any of you have any ideas for simple sewing projects or links or books that you would recomend for her....
she likes things like kath kidston and monsoon - funky stuff -
i thought of things like needle books and that kind of thing - it would be fantastic if she could make little things and prehaps do a craft fair maybe later in the year - so maybe simple projects on those lines ...

also if anyone knows of any links to some cheap online fabric shops that they could recomend, would be fab too .x

any ideas would be really welcome
thanks
maddy

Maddy, I got the Kath Kidston book called "SEW" and it has all the fabric pieces & buttons & stuff for making a bag included. Not tried it yet, but it looks pretty nice on the cover. Will try to make it up this week. It has other nice projects in it too.

I was looking on ebay at some of cath k s fabric but it is well expensive !! - i might go look in our local charity shop for similar stuff .
let us know (and a piccie ) how you get on with it - it might inspire her lucy.

Is she into recycling Maddy? A popular project is the jeans bag - where you cut up a pair of jeans and turn a leg of it into a bag and made a strap from a strip on the other leg. If she's creative, she'd probably get a kick out of learning how to alter and adapt her own clothes, with embellishments and the like. She could sew a skull and crossbones if she's a bit punk, or flowers if she's more hippy, onto a t-shirt or bag.

Had a search on Amazon and these kind of books look pretty cool to me:

what about using second hand clothes to make stuff? My friend made some bags using jeans using the seams already there and then sewing the bottoms etc, jeans might be hard to start with - but wonder if some other clothes might suit.

MK market sells fabric in bundles and they are all £1 a yard - you do have to buy the lot normally 5 yds - so there must be other market stalls like that your way.

How about different shape cushions? They would be good for a fair and not too difficult to make or puppets perhaps?

This little shop near me has some lovely fabric and the prices aren't too bad.

Christmas decorations or stockings? I made some that I just used Christmas fabric on one side and then used plain complementary fabric on the other. You can add some bells and sequins.

what about this one that was on the Channel 4 programme

A pair of really good sharp scissors . You need to keep these just for fabric .If you use them for card, paper etc it will blunt them and they won't then cut fabric. You probably already know this!! Just thought I would mentiion it.
