I woke up in the early hours and started thinking about altered art (as you do) and thought that a nice cardboard box with a slit in the top would make a children's money box, a tin would be too sharp.
Also a box called 'QuickFix' with little things that you need urgently and haven't time to look for them such as:
Sewing needle
A reel with different coloured cottons on
Shirt buttons for children's school shirt.
Small selotape
Small glue
Safety pins
Elastic band
Paper clips
A couple of £1 coins, always handy.
Pen or pencil
small notepad
A few plasters
etc., etc.
Any other ideas that our altered art can be used for other than just admiring it

Those cartons which have had gravy granules in are great to turn into a money box - they look like a tin but are cardboard and have the plastic lids you can cut a slot in easily.

Not sure if there are any still around but at crimbo Bentalls were selling big money tin cans - the type that won't open without a tin opener for a savings fund.
They were dirt cheap - about £1.50 and would be fantastic for altering ......... if only I had thought of it at the time .........

I gave a friend an altered tin for Christmas, and she suggested making 'string dispensers' - use a tin with a plastic lid (she also suggested buying the plastic lids you can get for pet food tins, for tins that don't already come with lids), and pierce a small hole in the top. The string sits inside, you just pull out as much as you need at the time, and they're easy to refill. I thought this would be good for gardener's twine, too, the tin could be altered with a gardening theme.

That's a good idea Nicky, especially for the gardener.
